Hello! Thank you to everyone who loves and supports the Love and Hope Music School.
Let’s bring you the latest news in Haiti.
From August 16th to 21st, we held the first Music School Summer Camp.
For this camp, Minjun Lee and Yoon Jung from Kansas joined Junghwan and me.
The camp was held during the news of the earthquake and typhoon, but we came back to Kansas safely after having a great time with students.
On the first day, kids from Nicholas orphanage who are learning Clarinet and Delma orphanage who are learning Saxophone gathered and practiced their instruments. For lunch, we cooked curry for them, and we played a water balloon game after playing the music together.
On the second day, kids from Sibert orphanage who are learning Flute and Upper Room orphanage who are learning Brass gathered, and on the third day, kids from Henry and Fontain orphanage who started to learn Violin and Viola gathered.
We were planning to have a competition on the last day of the camp, so all the students practiced and prepared so hard for the competition.
On the last day of the camp, about 70 students and 6 teachers, a total of 90 people including all the staff gathered. Students played music that they’ve been practicing in front of all the people and had their very first ensemble rehearsal.
Students’ music performance has improved greatly in a short period of time, which surprised us. Students who had a great new experience, and we who saw all those students had such a precious time together.
After the competition, Upper Room orphanage won first place. Congratulations to Upper Room students who played a great Brass instrument ensemble!
They received a trophy and backpack as a prize.
Haiti is having a hard time as always, but we were thankful that we were able to meet all the students. We are grateful to send our love to students through music.
We are planning to form a marching band with students who are learning wind instruments. We can’t wait to hear the beautiful music playing across Haiti. Thanks to everyone who made this trip possible.
Best regards,
Bohyun Kim
